ECS Express Mode Is Crazy... But Should You Use It?
August 26, 2026
Hola Amigos ๐ What happens when you deploy the SAME application using Traditional ECS and ECS Express Mode? That's exactly what we're going to find out in today's project. I built a Flask Portfolio application with multiple versions and deployed it using Terraform in two different ways: ๐ง Traditional ECS ๐ ECS Express Mode With Traditional ECS, we manually configure the infrastructure required to run our application. With ECS Express Mode, AWS takes care of a large part of the underlying infrastructure for us โ including components like the Application Load Balancer, Target Groups, HTTPS configuration, scaling, metrics, alarms, health checks and more. But does that make Express Mode better? In this video, we'll deploy both architectures, update the application version, compare the infrastructure, and I'll share my personal verdict on when I would choose Traditional ECS vs ECS Express Mode. My takeaway: Traditional ECS โ More control + better for learning ECS Express Mode โ More abstraction + simpler deployments ๐ BLOG ECS Express Mode vs Traditional ECS โ A Hands-on Comparison with Terraform: https://dev.to/aws-builders/ecs-express-mode-vs-traditional-ecs-a-hands-on-comparison-with-terraform-cnp ๐ป GITHUB REPOSITORY Terraform Projects: https://github.com/Pravesh-Sudha/terra-projects โธ๏ธ K8S-WITH-PRAVESH Today's project is different from the K8s-with-Pravesh series. What REALLY Happens Inside the Kubernetes API Server? ๐คฏ | K8s With Pravesh #4

What REALLY happens when you run: kubectl apply -f deployment.yaml ๐ค Most people think kubectl creates the Pods. But that's not actually what happens. In ๐๐ฝ๐ถ๐๐ผ๐ฑ๐ฒ ๐ฐ of ๐๐ด๐ ๐ช๐ถ๐๐ต ๐ฃ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐ฒ๐๐ต, we're going inside the Kubernetes API Server and following the complete journey of a request. ๐ช๐ฒ'๐น๐น ๐๐ป๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐๐๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ: ๐น What exactly is the Kubernetes API Server? ๐น Why is it called the front door of Kubernetes? ๐น Why is the API Server completely stateless? ๐น How Authentication and RBAC work ๐น What Admission Controllers actually do ๐น How the API Server interacts with etcd ๐น How the Watch mechanism works ๐น How Controllers, Scheduler and Kubelet eventually create the Pod ๐น Why kubectl doesn't actually create Pods ๐น Why Kubernetes resources have different API versions like v1, apps/v1, and batch/v1 ๐น How to interact directly with the Kubernetes API using kubectl proxy The goal of this episode isn't just to tell you what the API Server is, but to help you build a mental model of how Kubernetes actually works under the hood. โฑ๏ธ ๐ง๐๐ ๐๐ฆ๐ง๐๐ ๐ฃ๐ฆ 0:00 โ Introduction 0:59 โ What is API Server? 2:23 โ Interesting Fact 6:01 โ The Journey Begins 7:56 โ Conclusion ๐ ๐ฅ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฑ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐น๐ผ๐ด I also wrote a detailed blog covering the same topic, with the API Server demo and examples: ๐ https://dev.to/aws-builders/api-server-explained-like-never-before-episode-4-2pjo โธ๏ธ ๐๐ด๐ ๐ช๐ถ๐๐ต ๐ฃ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐ฒ๐๐ต This video is Episode 4 of my Kubernetes learning series, where we're breaking down Kubernetes concepts and understanding what happens under the hood. ๐๐ผ: https://dev.to/pravesh_sudha_3c2b0c2b5e0 ๐ ๐ ๐ฒ๐ฑ๐ถ๐๐บ: https://medium.com/@praveshsudha ๐บ ๐ฌ๐ผ๐๐ง๐๐ฏ๐ฒ: https://www.youtube.com/@pravesh-sudha If you found this video useful, consider liking, subscribing, and sharing it with someone who's learning Kubernetes. โค๏ธ Till then, Happy Coding ๐ #Kubernetes #K8s #DevOps #CloudComputing #AWS #Docker #KubernetesAPI #APIServer #CloudNative #CNCF #Containers #PlatformEngineering #DevOpsEngineer #KubernetesTutorial #LearnKubernetes
