ECS Express Mode Is Crazy... But Should You Use It?

August 26, 2026

youtube

Hola Amigos ๐Ÿ‘‹ What happens when you deploy the SAME application using Traditional ECS and ECS Express Mode? That's exactly what we're going to find out in today's project. I built a Flask Portfolio application with multiple versions and deployed it using Terraform in two different ways: ๐Ÿง  Traditional ECS ๐Ÿš€ ECS Express Mode With Traditional ECS, we manually configure the infrastructure required to run our application. With ECS Express Mode, AWS takes care of a large part of the underlying infrastructure for us โ€” including components like the Application Load Balancer, Target Groups, HTTPS configuration, scaling, metrics, alarms, health checks and more. But does that make Express Mode better? In this video, we'll deploy both architectures, update the application version, compare the infrastructure, and I'll share my personal verdict on when I would choose Traditional ECS vs ECS Express Mode. My takeaway: Traditional ECS โ†’ More control + better for learning ECS Express Mode โ†’ More abstraction + simpler deployments ๐Ÿ“Œ BLOG ECS Express Mode vs Traditional ECS โ€” A Hands-on Comparison with Terraform: https://dev.to/aws-builders/ecs-express-mode-vs-traditional-ecs-a-hands-on-comparison-with-terraform-cnp ๐Ÿ’ป GITHUB REPOSITORY Terraform Projects: https://github.com/Pravesh-Sudha/terra-projects โ˜ธ๏ธ K8S-WITH-PRAVESH Today's project is different from the K8s-with-Pravesh series. Have you ever wondered what actually happens after you run: kubectl apply -f deployment.yaml A few seconds later, your Pods are running. But what happens in between? In this episode of K8s with Pravesh, we trace the complete journey of a Kubernetes Deploymentโ€”from your terminal all the way to a running container inside the cluster. We'll understand how: ๐Ÿ”น API Server receives your request ๐Ÿ”น ETCD stores the desired state ๐Ÿ”น Controller Manager reconciles the cluster ๐Ÿ”น ReplicaSet creates Pods ๐Ÿ”น Scheduler selects the best node ๐Ÿ”น Kubelet manages the workload ๐Ÿ”น Container Runtime starts the container If you've ever wanted to understand Kubernetes beyond just YAML files and kubectl commands, this video is for you. โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ” ๐Ÿ“š K8s with Pravesh Playlist: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlens1h3v6tf1apwqaJDYjtdry-uFTUH2&si=8cwr0bJ7ba7EPXOk ๐Ÿ“ Read the accompanying blog: https://dev.to/aws-builders/what-really-happens-when-you-run-kubectl-apply-episode-3-22kp โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ” ๐ŸŒ Connect with me ๐Ÿ’ผ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/praveshsudha/ ๐Ÿฆ X (Twitter): https://x.com/praveshstwt ๐Ÿ’ป GitHub: https://github.com/Pravesh-Sudha ๐Ÿ“ Blog: https://blog.praveshsudha.com ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ’ป DEV Community: https://dev.to/aws-builders โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ” #kubernetes #kubectl #devops #cloudcomputing #aws #cncf #containers #platformengineering #k8s #docker #opensource #softwareengineering
